The city of Eugene is the second most populated city in the state of Oregon, right after Portland. Located in the Willamette Valley, it is also the county seat of Lane County. The first known people to settle in the Eugene area were known as the Kalapuyans. However, according to archeologists, the ancestors of the Kalapuyans may have been in the area for as long as 10,000 years. In late 18th and early 19th century, French fur traders settled in the Willamette Valley. Towards the middle of the 19th century, a settler by the name of Eugene Franklin Skinner arrived with over 1200 other colonists. It is his name that the city today bears. He built the first Anglo cabin, as advised by the Kalapuyans, on a high ground to avoid flooding. The building served as a trading post and was registered as an official post office in 1850.
Today, Eugene is home to more than 150,000 residents. It has grown significantly since its early days, and it continues to expand.
