About Florida

Florida is one of the 50 US States. It is located in the southeastern region of the country. It borders the Gulf of Mexico to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Alabama and Georgia to the north and the Straits of Florida and Cuba to the south. Florida is the 22nd most extensive US state. It is also the 3rd most populous state. The most populated municipality is Jacksonville, but the capital is Tallahassee. Florida is actually a peninsula, and it has the largest coastline out of the other 50 states. The coastline is approximately 1350 miles long. Much of the state of Florida is at sea level and has predominantly sedimentary soil. The climate ranges from a comfortable subtropical climate in the north to a hot and dry tropical climate in the south of the state. The culture of Florida has been influenced by many other civilizations – Native Americans, European Americans, Hispanics, Latinos and African Americans. The marks of all of these cultures can be noted in Florida’s architecture and cuisine. The name Florida originates from its original name – La Florida, which was given by a European Spanish explorer in 1513. In Spanish, La Florida means land of flowers. Florida is internationally known for golf, auto racing, tennis and water sports.

Weather in Florida

Florida has a predominantly humid subtropical and tropical climate. The mean temperature in July is around 90 degrees. The mean low temperature in January, which is the coldest month of the year, is from 40 to 60 degrees. Florida is considered to be the warmest out of 50 US states. In summer, the temperatures seldom exceed 100 degrees. The highest ever recorded temperature was 109 degrees in June 1931. The lowest temperature, however, was -2 degrees in February 1899. It rarely snows in Florida, and even when it does, it generally occurs in the north of the country. Frost is usually more common than snow. Unfortunately, severe weather is common, including tornadoes, water sprouts, thunderstorms, and hurricanes. Some of the most devastating hurricanes were Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Wilma. When it comes to rainfall, Florida is the state with the highest precipitation rates in the US. On the bright side, Florida has an average of 2800 hours of sunshine per year, which is why it’s often called the Sunshine State.
