New Jersey has two climates, depending on the region of the state. In the southern, central and northeast region, the climate is predominantly humid subtropical. On the other hand, in the northwest region, the climate is more humid continental, which means that it is cooler there due to the elevation. The humid continental climate is considered to be micro-thermal. On average, New Jersey has 2,400 to 2,800 hours of sunshine per year. The summers are hot and humid and the temperatures generally range from 82 degrees to 87 degrees Fahrenheit. The cooler summer months generally have a temperature of 60 degrees to 69 degrees.
The winters in New Jersey are cold, with high temperatures from 34 degrees to 43 degrees Fahrenheit, and the cooler temperatures from 16 degrees to 28 degrees. New Jersey has 43-51 inches of rain annually. The record high temperature was 110 degrees Fahrenheit. The record low was -34 degrees. Even though hurricanes, tropical storms and tornadoes rarely happen in New Jersey, it was hit by Hurricane Sandy, which caused a significant amount of damage and destruction to the state.
